Arc for macOS and Windows will stop working on 22 December 2026

By megan

The Browser Company has closed new Arc accounts and set a desktop shutdown date. Existing users can import into Dia or export tab links before access ends.

The Browser Company announced Arc’s shutdown on 22 October 2026. Arc for macOS and Windows will continue receiving basic updates for now, but the company says both desktop versions will stop working on 22 December. Anyone using Arc as a daily workspace should move or save what they need before that date.

The company says it is concentrating its engineering and security teams on Dia, its newer browser. That explains its decision; it is not independent evidence that Dia is faster or more secure. TechCrunch reported that Arc had already stopped receiving new feature development in 2025.

Three dates in the shutdown

New Arc accounts could no longer be created from 22 October 2026. Existing desktop accounts remain usable until the December cutoff.

On 23 November 2026, Arc Search on iOS and Android will lose Browse for Me and other AI features. Users will also lose Arc sign-in and tab syncing on mobile. The company says a lighter iOS browser will remain available; Android’s Arc Search is scheduled for full deprecation on 22 December.

On 22 December 2026, Arc for macOS and Windows will stop working and Arc accounts will be deactivated. The company says personal data tied to those accounts will be deleted within 30 days, but warns that it will be unable to identify or retrieve Arc user data from the shutdown date. Users should therefore treat 22 December, not the later deletion window, as their migration deadline. These dates and platform distinctions come from the company’s shutdown timeline and FAQ.

Import into Dia or export tab links

The company says Dia can import Arc passwords, history, tabs, profiles, folders, bookmarks and extensions on macOS and Windows. New Dia users can select Arc during setup. Existing Dia users can choose Import from Another Browser from Dia’s Mac menu bar or Windows app menu. Arc’s Spaces become Profiles in Dia, while Folders become Tab Groups.

For someone moving to a different browser, Arc’s export instructions describe saving tabs as a list of links. On macOS, the path is Arc > Settings > Advanced > Export Data. On Windows, open Settings, then choose Export Data under Advanced > Export Spaces and tabs. The FAQ also gives separate open-tab export steps for Arc Search on iOS and Android. Users should inspect the saved file and confirm that anything else they rely on has moved before the desktop cutoff. The documented tab-link export should not be presented as a verified transfer of passwords or history to every browser.
