Walmart and Sam’s Club Tap-to-Pay Rollout Starts August 24

Select U.S. Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations will begin accepting eligible contactless cards, phones and smartwatches on August 24, 2026. All stores and clubs are planned by the end of 2026, followed by fuel stations in mid-2027.

Walmart and Sam’s Club Tap-to-Pay Rollout Starts August 24

Walmart will begin enabling tap-to-pay transactions at select U.S. Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations on August 24, 2026.

The company’s rollout plan calls for contactless acceptance at all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026. Fuel stations are scheduled to follow by mid-2027.

August 24 is therefore the start of a phased deployment, not a nationwide activation date.

The first locations have not been identified

Walmart has not published a list of the stores and clubs included in the opening phase. It also has not said whether every checkout terminal at a participating location will be activated simultaneously.

Availability may consequently differ by location and register while the deployment proceeds. Shoppers should look for the contactless symbol on the terminal rather than assume that every Walmart or Sam’s Club will support tapping from the first day.

Google has separately confirmed Google Pay support at the participating locations. TechCrunch reports that the rollout also covers Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Eligible cards, phones and watches can tap

Where contactless acceptance is active, shoppers will be able to use an eligible contactless payment card or a supported phone or smartwatch configured with a compatible wallet.

Walmart also says eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards can be added to digital wallets. Eligibility still depends on the card issuer, payment method, device, wallet configuration and terminal. The announcement does not establish that every card or NFC-equipped device will work.

For Google Wallet on Android, Google lists several prerequisites: NFC must be enabled, Google Pay must be the default payment application, a supported payment method must be configured, and the phone must have a screen lock and meet the platform’s security requirements. The device may also request screen-lock verification during payment.

Apple Pay similarly requires a supported device and eligible card. Apple says an in-store transaction normally requires authentication with Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode, with limited exceptions such as supported Express Mode transactions.

How NFC contactless payment works

Near Field Communication, or NFC, provides the short-range wireless link between a contactless card or device and the checkout terminal.

Under the EMV Contactless specifications, the payment device and terminal exchange the information required to process the transaction without the card being inserted. EMVCo says the chip generates a one-time security code for each transaction.

A mobile wallet adds its own device and account controls to that contactless exchange. Those controls are not identical across every wallet.

For Apple Pay specifically, Apple documents that the device sends a device-specific account number and a transaction-specific dynamic security code after authentication. Apple says the device does not send the original payment-card number to the terminal.

Google’s published setup guidance confirms the NFC, screen-lock and device-security requirements for Google Wallet, but those requirements should not be presented as proof that every wallet, issuer or merchant handles payment data identically.

Tap to pay is the interface used to initiate the transaction. It does not guarantee approval. Card issuers and payment networks can still decline a payment, while merchant, issuer and wallet policies continue to govern refunds, transaction records and account data.

Walmart Pay and Scan & Go are staying

The contactless rollout does not replace Walmart’s existing payment options.

Walmart says customers can continue using cash, payment cards and Walmart Pay. Walmart Pay remains connected to the Walmart application, purchase records, receipts and eligible Walmart+ fuel benefits.

At Sam’s Club, Scan & Go will also remain available. That service lets members scan and pay for products while shopping instead of using a conventional checkout lane.

The technical change is an additional acceptance path. Walmart is adding the contactless card and device-wallet workflow alongside its proprietary payment services.

What remains unknown

Walmart has published the broad deployment schedule but not the initial store list, supported payment-network matrix, terminal suppliers or register-level activation plan.

It also describes nationwide store and club coverage by the end of 2026 and fuel-station coverage by mid-2027 as plans. Those dates should not be treated as completed availability until the deployments can be independently verified.

For shoppers, the practical boundary is simple: tap-to-pay support begins at selected locations on August 24, while nationwide availability remains a staged rollout.
